This unique physiology also causes comb jellies to refract light, so they often shine with a rainbow of iridescent color. In the absence of sunlight, comb jellies can still be colorful, if less vivid. Most species are bioluminescent.

Since so few bioluminescence studies focus on the deep seafloor, it’s unclear whether the trait is generally rare at this level of the ocean or whether the situation is unique to the Bahamas. “We really need to get out there and look at more regions and see if what we discovered on this trip is valid,” Frank said. However, due to budget cuts, the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute at Florida Atlantic University has sold the ship that launches the sub used during the expedition. “Its really tragic that the Johnson Sea-Link is no longer operational,” said Frank, whose study was published in September in the Journal of Experiment Biology.

It was once a mystery why some types of algae produced these beautiful bioluminescence shows.  It is now believed that this is a method to provide light to large predators, such as squid, to facilitate their predation of the krill that eat the algae.  Even microscopic plants know that “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”.

rhamphotheca: Bioluminescence Bioluminescence, or the ability of an organism to create light, is one of nature’s most amazing phenomena, seemingly drawn more from science fiction than science and natural history. While only a few land dwellers, like fireflies and some fungi, can make their own light, bioluminescence is very common in the deep sea. Bacteria, jellyfish, starfish, clams, worms, crustaceans, squid, fish, and sharks are just some of the groups of marine animals that have bioluminescent members. All bioluminescent organisms use a reaction between an enzyme and a substrate to make light, but different species use different chemicals in the process. This suggests that the ability to make light evolved many times throughout the ages.
